| Driving to (and as fast as we could from) Marmaris we were shocked by the level of cheap and unquestionably low-IQ tourism in this area. So what a relief it was to turn off the main road and drive through a gorgeous green landscape and see no-one. The drive is a joy and the last bit is not quite as dramatic as this website suggests (any car and any driver with a licence can do it). Arriving at Club Amazon we had a bit of a second shock. We did not quite expect it to look this much like a camping. And well, our ‘superior bungalow’ was about as not-superior as I’ve ever seen. I now understand: extremely basic really means EXTREMELY basic. But from this point onwards, all the surprises were pleasant. Even though it was PEAK season, it still felt quiet. The atmosphere was pleasant and easy going. The clientele, mainly Turkish, came across as a well-educated and interesting lot. Nice faces. The food was very good. Great fun to take a canoe and paddle to the little beach. Chilling out in the afternoon on a big cushion in the shadow with a glass of Turkish tea. All in all, very pleasant. A few things could easily be improved. Most sun beds at the beach need repair (not the kind of sand you can spread your towel on). Slightly higher quality bed linen. A few more drink options than tea and raki. And the price-quality ratio… it was a bit too expensive for what it was really. But we did like it. |
